So I have an Alarm System, Now What?

Often times people make an investment in their home security, then as time goes on, and they become accostomed to the peace of mind that their security system gives them, they begin to become lax with their utilization of the system. With this in mind, we have compiled a list of things that you can do to maintain the security of your premisis utilizing your alarm system:

1. ARM THE SYSTEM!

Often times people become lax in utilization of their alarm system, it is imperitive that when you leave the house, you arm your system. If the system is not armed, it will see no need to call out when an alarm situation exists.

2. Remote Access

With today's technology, you are able to control your Alarm System from your smartphone device. This will allow you to make sure that every time you leave your home, it is armed and secured. You can check the status of your alarm system,

3. Secure Keys and Key Fobs

If you have a key fob as part of your system it is imperitive that you keep in mind that while this drastically increases the ease of use of your system, it also gives master access to arming and disarming your alarm system from the push of a button. It is important when not in use, that you keep your Key Fob close to you and prevent any unauthorized access to it. In the event of an alarm event, if a would-be-criminal gains access to this keyfob, they could disable your system. For this reason, if you keep your keys by the door, you will want to remove your key fob before placing it there. The best place for it to be at all times is on your person.

4. Protect Passcodes

Set up passcodes for each individual user. For example:

Spouse 1: 0000
Spouse 2: 2000
Child 1: 0030
Child 2: 0040
Guest 0005
Duress 1111

By doing this, it prevents the need for everyone to remember the same code, meaning that the need to write it down will be drastically diminished. We strongly advise you that you never, under any circumstances write down the codes for your Alarm System.
With this in mind, it is also imperitive that you do not write down or share your verbal passcode. Do not give a verbal passcode to a guest user and make sure that each user has their own verbal passcode.

5. Setup your Duress Code

The duress code is a feature that most modern alarm system posess, it disables the audible alarm but sends out a signal to the central station that notifies us that you are in trouble so that we can discretely dispatch the police to your premesis. This should be setup with an easy to remember code that will be shared with all users of your alarm system.

6. Change your Guest Code

Of course we trust the people that we give our passcodes to, but even those we trust may accidently give others information that they are privvy to. After the need for a guest to have an Alarm Code diminishes, change the code to something else for the next person that you are going to share it with. By restricting access to your alarm system, you can avoid any confusion as to who has access to your alarm system at any given moment.

7. Supplement your Alarm System

By adding cameras to your premesis, you can drastically increase the probability of a successful prosecution. With video evidence that a person was on your premesis, there is no doubt to anyone that an intruder on your property was attempting to commit crimes. In the event that an intruder flees after setting off the alarm, a camera system can give police valuable insight into who the intruder was, leading to an arrest, and preventing the same occurence from happening to someone else.

8. Keep doors and Windows Closed and Locked.

This is another simple way to not only keep your premesis secure, but to prevent false alarms situations from occuring.

9. Maintainence

It is important that you maintain your security system, make sure that at least yearly, your alarm system is being maintained and serviced by a licensed professional. Call JEM Security Solutions LLC. Today if you have any questions or concerns about your home security.
